And Tomorrow Was Already Dead

I looked up into the sky, saw the great furrows left by the trailing froth of cloud whipped into being by the beast blazing into the horizon. Minutes later a flash would blind the earth and the wind, the flames, the heat would drown the world in a raging torrent of death and finally silence. And I knew that tomorrow was already dead.

  1. Insanity virus

The voices, the voices. Whispering, screaming, babbling, wailing, yelling, whispering. The whispering, the whispering is the worst. It suggests little things in that quiet sinister voice of theirs, cannibalism, murder, drinking the blood from the skulls of those I have killed. They come to me in the darkest of dreams, the worst of nightmares, saying things that chill me to the core of my soul.
The insanity, the insanity catches everyone eventually. Consumes everything in its path. It started with the children. The sweet innocent children, they turned on their parents, carers, family ripping their flesh, gnawing their bones, sucking their blood. The children they could not resist the voices but we, we are stronger.
We do not give in to the voices just that easily, of course the antidote helps even if just for a little while, allowing just a few peaceful hours of silence. But our supplies are running low. Dangerously low. However brilliant frank says the antidote is we have still been disappearing one by one. First was Shan next blue and others so many others. Frank says that he doesn’t know where they went but we have our suspicions. They wandered off towards the city where the children lure those of us remaining to devour us or make us join them. That or they were ether killed by frank and with good reason to, he doesn’t want them leaking secrets about our last few strongholds in the country or about where they can find us once again before we move. This is not just a country thing, no its happening all over the globe. I suppose if the media were still around they would call it a pandemic.
The time it takes for the antidote to wear off from my system lessening. The periods of silence are becoming gradually louder, the voices beginning to seep through the cracks in my mind. I know my days in this world are few. The whispering is getting more frequent and beginning to take effect on me. I would have killed eve if it wasn’t for Bo that stopped me. I stood there while she had slept, dagger in my hand ready to plunge it into her back while she slept. Bo of course being Bo hasn’t told anyone about the little incident or I would be long gone by now if frank had heard.
I can tell that I have to make a decision now or something terrible will happen. The decision I have to make will be terrible in its self but it will save the lives of those in the pack.
    *

I have decided I will do it. Over the past few days the antidote has little if no effect on my system anymore. Some would call it the cowards way out in any other circumstances I would, but not today, today it is the sensible thing to do. Thing to save my pack. A bullet to the brain the quickest way to send the whispers in my head packing.
I pulled my gun out its holder on my belt, a quick swift end I thought. I checked that it was loaded which indeed it was. Bringing the gun to the side of my head a swift pull of the trigger as I had done so many times before. Then the blackness came.

  2. World war 3

It started off when the German president demanded more money from the rest of the world but they weren’t allowed any more for their country they had to be more independent. So the German government declared war on the rest of the world. First they invaded France with big tanks and military vehicle’s and stormed the French citizens and killed nearly every to go near the vehicles. After a while France sent out air bombers to stop the Germans from further more destroying their land but the Germans were way ahead and sent out fighter jets to destroy the French bombers. Soon they nearly already took over France, there were barely any defences left in France so the French gave in to the Germans but the Germans weren’t done. Next they tried to invade America but failed due to the anti-flight missile, shot every single bomber out of the sky and into the ocean. That same day the British went to France to take back what the Germans claimed of France there were prison camps for the French so the British let them go out of the cells and reclaimed France for the French. Then we took over the whole of German, we annihilated them on their own soil just goes to show how stupid they really were in the past wars but who was going to take Germany for a country the British the Americans or the French? by Daniel b

  3. I watched as the sun rose above the waves. An orange glow. The waves crashed up between the buildings; it was high tide and the waves filled the streets and spilled out the bedroom windows. I watched as people fought for their lives. I could see the terror and fright in their faces. Many were drowning and been washed away. Bodies floated face down in the dark waters. A small child saw me and for a second we smiled before she was dragged down to a dark grave.
I woke. The same dream every night. A new world but the same dream.
I wondered to myself, why did this have to happen? Today off all days; 21st of December 2012, the day of death the day the world ends. Children, poor innocent little children were been torn from their families, one after another and been dragged to their dark gloomy deaths.
I wouldn’t. I was determined to live. To survive.

  4. The New World

I woke up, my heart beating. I had that stupid nightmare again. Once my heart has slowed down enough I opened my eyes. I looked and saw that I was in my normal bed. Then I turned around. I was outside but how could I be outside. I was sure that my bed should have been in my room. That was when I saw it.
I was in my garden or where my garden should have been, surrounded by lots of different debris. The sky seemed smoky and slightly orange. It was so quiet, unusually quiet. I lived in the middle of Los Angeles, where it’s only quiet in the middle of the night or if something was wrong. This case it was when something was wrong.

That’s was the moment when I heard a scream echoing in the messed up environment. I ran toward it, I was pleased that I had fallen asleep with my normal clothes on in that moment. When I got nearer to the scream I saw that it was someone that I knew very well. It was my two year old sister Gabby in someone’s arms. I picked her up and checked her over. She wouldn’t stop screaming though. That was the moment when I realised that I was surrounded by most of my family dead. I found myself joining my sister in her screaming. I ran away from there then carrying Gabby with me. I had just seen my mum, dad and older brother Jason dead before my very eyes. But what had happened in the time where I was asleep to the time where I thought that the world ended.

I didn’t know what to do. Look around to see if I could see any more of my family or take myself and Gabby somewhere safe. I chose the former. Before I went any further I put Gabby in my seemly undamaged bed so I could find some more people or some food of drink. I walked round my street trying to find anyone. I was only 15 and at the moment in charge of Gabby. I couldn’t find Haley my twin sister. She was out for the night with her boyfriend Jake. Maybe she is with him and they have survived.

My mind was made up. I was going to travel the 10 miles it takes to get to Jake’s house and I will choose what we have to do then. I hope they are both alive for Gabby’s sake. I went back to where my house used to be. Someone was with Gabby! I ran and ran the 100 yards it takes to get there. But it wasn’t a person it was Ruby my dog. I was so happy I didn’t even think to look for her. I put ruby back on the floor and pick Gabby up so I could start walking to meet the fate of my sister.

  6. And So The Insanity Began…

I observed the coming of hell on earth from the small panes of my window. Death was near and, like my own, the clouds tears were crashing down with no intention of stopping. Lightning lit up the sky and shone down like spotlights, every now and again the flashes would catch the bodies of the innocent in its beam. They were shortly followed by the roaring of the thunder, interrupting people’s cries and screams.
A single bird fled from the darkness’ embrace. I cowered beneath the tarpaulin, hiding the night. The gas lamp let out a low glow and shadows danced over the cracked, plastered walls. Almost as if wanting to escape them just as much as I did.
    But I couldn’t.
Because I was trapped here, just like those overly happy shadows. Curse them for being so happy. How dare they when I’m in dying need of sympathy.
But I can’t shout at them because they’ll leave.
I don’t want them to leave.
    I need their company.
I was almost jealous of those figures down there in the street, running around helplessly with others by their side. Unlike them, I was alone and unable to leave this small box of a room.
    But the view was great.
I could see everything from way up here. If I was any higher I’d be in the midst of it all.
    Wouldn’t that be something?

  7. The sun rose on another day. New York woke with the call of birds and the distant roar of a lion pride pulling down a morning kill. The zoo animals were truly wild now and new York was their jungle. I checked my bow, my knife and left the shelter.
Not long after I left I spotted a deer in the distance. I clenched my bow in my left hand aim and fired. The arrow hits the deer in the head and it dropped down dead. I had to be quick if I wanted its meat. As I get closer to the deer I see a man in the distance running at me with a knife. I quickly shoot him with my bow.
I hate having to kill people but it’s the only way to survive out here. “Kill or be killed” my old friend said. He was killed last month. The man lay wriggling at my feet and after a moment he went limp. I walked back over to the deer which was already starting to attract birds. They soon fled when I got there.
I drag the deer back to my shelter, skin and cook it. Suddenly there’s a knock at the door and a man storms in with a knife in hand. It’s the man I shot earlier, I thought I killed him. He comes at me with a knife and everything goes black…

  8. I sucked in dry air and looked out over the pier; dead earth starched out to the horizon and the distant sea. We had trekked for ages just to get the dryness out our throat, the sun beaming down on my sun burned neck. Wed lost the woman days ago; she had wondered into a gully, snapping her ankle on the rocks. She had no hope, pulling the last drop out my bag, gulping it down just to stay alive; it was like a flood running down my throat.

It had all happened 14 days ago: we had decided to make the impossible journey. We were fools. We knew it couldn’t be done, but we had no choice.

Each step sinking slowly into the sand, my feet burning through my shoes, this was the place of death. Nothing lived. Nothing died. The vast desert that lay before us.

  9. As the last few bush fires burnt out, the bright orange flames disappearing, a family came out of their house. They looked into the distance; there was nothing. No more shades of greens, just depressing greys. The world had become a dark, empty space. The family of five crunched their way through the ash, hoping they might come across something that signified life. Maybe a person, an animal or even just a plant. Nothing. The Father of this family, a scientist, knew that this terrible time was coming. He studied the Sun and months before the Earth came to an end he had noticed that it was getting abnormally bigger as each day passed. It was getting closer to the Earth. He tried to warn people but no one would listen; nobody wanted to listen. As the Sun got closer, Earth started to get hotter causing every strand of grass, every tree small or big to catch fire from the heat. The Earth was blanketed in orange, yellow and red flames, burning everything that got in its path. The bush fires got out of hand and burnt down every building and eventually killing all the people. As he knew about it months in advance, he was able to take precaution. He built an inflammable wall around his house to protect his family, he made sure there wasn’t a single strand of grass, plant or tree left in his garden and he made sure to store plenty of food in every room in his house. He built a massive extension onto the side of his well-guarded house so that he could keep as many pairs of animals as he could so that they wouldn’t go extinct, and he got as many families as he could to stay in his house. There weren’t many as most didn’t believe him and thought he was talking nonsense. Now with only thirty eight people left, it was their job to stay alive.

Each member of the family wore a mask to cover their face so they didn’t inhale the smoke that blanketed the space around them and into the far distance of nothing. The sun had decreased since the two months that ended the world in 8064. It wasn’t easy to see the sun as a thick layer of fog covered it. The sun now looked a dull grey. It was as if all the light and brightness in it had gone; all the happiness was gone. The river flowed down past the place where the trees used to stand. Ash floated on top of the water making the river look ugly and sad. The ash was never ending and whenever the river tried to dispose it, there just came more.

  10. The Ninja Granny

It was all dark when she woke from her long sleep. She got up slowly and looked outside. Everything was on fire, all buildings had been destroyed. She walked around looking, for life, every where seemed so quiet. In the distance she could see someone under a bus, she ran over to help not knowing what to do she tried to pull the she pull the person out, never thinking she would. To her shock she pulled the person out easily. The person was still alive; she was pleased but did not know how she had the strength to do this. Most of the day she spent her time saving people. Somehow she had moved parts of buildings, cars and planes, most people were found hurt, but alive. A few hours later she came across rubble which looked like it had been from an important building. She walked across to the rubble and she saw a crown in the stone. She went over and moved the stone, a person was there who looked important, and it was the Queen!!! She had saved the Queen. The Queen said to the granny that she would let her live with her in the new palace when it is built.

After a few years the Queen rebuilt the city with the help of ‘Ninja Granny.’

  11. Life After the End (continued)

There was a weak breeze that was trying to desperately get rid of the ash, but whenever the ash was taken away in the wind, it would always end up back on Earth somewhere. Quiet voices came from behind them. Maybe there were others. The family turned round, but all hope was stolen from them as they realised it was just the rest of the families coming out of the house. ‘I told you to stay indoors!’ shouted the Father. His voice echoed throughout the Earth, eerily. The families didn’t hear him. They stood in shock as they took in the new Earth. Their faces grew pale and one of the children started whimpering, clinging on to her mother’s leg, afraid of this new place. ‘Get back in the house for God’s sake! You don’t have any masks! Think about the children, you shouldn’t be letting them breathe in these poisonous fumes!’ The families all grabbed onto each other, hanging on for dear life as though this place would suddenly suck them into a big black hole. They quickly ran inside still clinging to their loved ones. All that was left outside was the family of five. The Father, Mother, and their three children who were now young adults.

Even if the Earth wasn’t a Utopia before, compared to the Earth now, it was. It is like waking up from a dream and finding a nightmare. The ash will eventually come to an end, the green grass, beautiful plants and the tall trees the children will climb will start to grow again. Buildings will be rebuilt, animals won’t be endangered, there will be people, towns and cities and maybe in the future, the Earth will become a wonderful place again; maybe better than it was before. But it’s all down to these thirty eight people to help rebuild the Earth again.

  12. That Awful Night

I lay in my bed, unable to sleep. The room was pitch black, yet with a glimpse of light shining through window from the moonlight. I knew that something was going to happen. I could feel it in my body. Some strange feeling that was about to erupt. A feeling that something was about to change everything. But what? What could happen? My thoughts were interrupted as I began to hear a faint rumbling sound. The lights went out. All I could see was darkness. The faint sound soon became louder and louder. My heart raced, beating faster and faster. Suddenly a huge flash shone briefly through the window, and a loud, furious roar accompanied it. And then, bang! I sat bolt upright. The sound of the bang shook the walls. My windows shattered and tiny shards of glass fell to the floor, scattered, still glistening in the moonlight. I jumped out of bed. The wind blew through my window and my door burst open. I raced to the front door and ran outside, into the street, to find trees had been knocked down and crushed, lampposts had been smashed. Everything was falling. I looked back, and my house was gone.

It was late morning and pinkish clouds were rolling in, filling the sky with an array of colours. The sun shone brightly among the clouds. The world was silent. No birds singing, no cars driving past. Nothing. I looked around me. Everything was as it was before. Last night. That awful night. I kept on walking, in the hope that somewhere I would find something to eat. I was beginning to think that there would be nowhere to go, and no one to see.

After three weeks I had almost given up hope.

A body lay in the road. Rags. Lying alone. My mouth let out a gasp at what was before me. Thoughts were madly rushing round my head. What should I do? I walked over to this person. She was young. She had blonde hair. Her face was frozen in pain. In agony. Blood was pouring out of a wound in her side. Her scarlet red flesh, had been torn up, devoured by some vicious being. My heart began to race again. She was dead. But only just. I looked around in search of someone to help me. I had to do something.

Out of nowhere, a peculiar man dressed in black came out of the rubble of the fallen houses. He had dark mysterious eyes, and it seemed his arm was injured. I could see him reaching out for something in his pocket, but I could not tell what it was. He walked towards me, slowly at first, but soon picking up pace. The walk soon broke out into a run, and before long my heart was pounding at a rate unimaginable. He was quite close now, and his face was full of anger.

I turned around, and began to run as fast as I could, but he kept gaining and gaining on me, he pulled out a knife from his pocket. It was too late. I could not escape. He sank his knife deep into my side. I let out a cry, but it was no use. No one could hear me. All I could see was darkness…

  14. Trapped

The air was poison for a hundred and fifty years; the air was absolutely nothing but death. I breathed a lungful of sterilized air from my mask; mask air tasted metallic and unreal. 6 million people suffocated and fell to the ground slowly dying. 4 million, 3 million, 2 million… go above the wet dull ground and you’ll be dead. We all knew it: dead and gone, so easily. I sucked in the metallic air. Food was scarce, so I hunted. These days I wasn’t fussy. Today was a good day, a good day to hunt, the time the rats and snails would come digging through the wet soil.
I listened. Held still. I was ready to pounce. I waited patient- still. It squealed as I pounced. There! I had two rats in my hand enough to feed me my wife and two children.
Our family was large. Too large, too hard to survive; the council had passed an order. My youngest child was to die, tonight! Hunting was a distraction.
‘Are you ready?’ Barron asked. He was there to take me to my child. It was my responsibility to take his life: my child.
We stood at the brink looking at the yellow fog. Barron held his hand on my child’s shoulder, as if to say ‘we need him dead’. I stepped forwards facing my child, I don’t want my son to die in pain. I chose to kill myself instead. I pulled my mask off my face, I could feel my lungs dying shrivelling smaller and slower.
